Art. 9 ECHR
Ruling
The freedom to manifest one’s religion also encompasses peaceful door-to-door proselytizing. In a democratic and pluralistic society, a blanket prohibition on missionary activities—even where they involve ideas that may be unwelcome or undesired—is disproportionate and goes beyond what is necessary to protect the rights of others.
(Case concerning Jehovah’s Witnesses residing in Bulgaria who were sanctioned under municipal regulations prohibiting the disturbance of public peace and quiet.)
